The Truth about Pure Fish Oil

The menhaden, for example, is a common species that lives in the Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.  It is a bottom feeder that serves many purposes.  One of which is to keep the water clean.  It is also a source of food for many larger species. One of the major producers of what is supposed to be pure fish oil in the US sucks up menhaden by the boatload.  Independent analysis has shown that the oils contain high levels of PCBs, which are known to cause cancer in humans. Another concern is freshness.  One of the most common complaints about the supplement is that it causes fishy tasting burps or an aftertaste.  It’s not actually the supplement that causes the problem.  It is lack of freshness. Supplement manufacturers are not required to test for freshness, but if they abide by the standards set by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, they do.  The CRN has set standards for purity or contaminant content and for freshness.  But, abiding by the standards is voluntary. Pure fish oil could provide numerous benefits, because of the omega-3 content, specifically the Docosahexaenoic acid and the Eicosapentaenoic acid that it contains.  Those omega-3s are not found in fruits, vegetables, grains or vegetable oil.  They are found only in some species of fatty fish.
