The Truth about Pure Fish Oil
The Truth about Pure Fish OilAuthor: Laurel CohenIs there any such thing as pure fish oil? These days, practically everything in the environment is contaminated with some sort of toxin. The latest studies conducted by the US Geological Service found that all of the streams tested, as well as the wildlife that swim in them, were contaminated with some degree of mercury. For years, we have known that mercury contamination is a problem in the oceans, particularly the Atlantic. The major sources of the contamination are coal-fired electric plants, but even if we found alternative energy sources, it would be many years before the mercury levels decreased. The same is true of contaminants known as polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs. Industries have been forbidden to use them for decades, but they are not biodegradable. So, they are still present in the silt of rivers, which lead to the oceans and get in the fish. Bottom-feeding species contain the largest amounts of PCBs. Mercury and PCBs are not the only things that we have to worry about when we are trying to find pure fish oil. They are the most common contaminants, but there are other concerns. Many species are not sustainable. Fishing practices used to haul them in are not environmentally friendly. One of the common fishing practices literally vacuums up entire schools, which damages the ocean floor and leaves little left over for repopulating the species.

When gas was under $1.00 the prediction was made by this author it would go to $3.00 per gallon. Here we are with gasoline priced well over $3.00 per gallon, and I am now convinced that the cost of gasoline will reach $6.00 per gallon in the United States at some point during 2009.
