City Editor of The Tribune got a SMS from  an IPS officer seeking ‘forgiveness’ on ‘friendship day’ and was pleased to get. Then he witnessed the news covering of the fury created by the students during electioneering to the University Council.  He got disturbed at learning a scribe of the Tribune mauled by a land developer. Obviously he was disturbed.  I am of the opinion that such news stories would not ignite any minds except in the sense, that the act of the IPS officer is an exception and that the latter incidents a routine affair in these days. Wealth, knowledge, power and lineage should usually breed sophistication, fineness, responsibility and modesty rather these have now bred arrogance, defiance and a superiority complex of being above the law.  However, this is not a new phenomenon. This practice is going on since the advent of the civilization. We are reminded of the dictum that ‘might is right’ prevailing since times immemorial. It is being replicated in today’s society, though unfortunately. Earlier, might was exercised with a sense of justice, an element so vehemently missing now. Earlier, again, might was synonym of velour, today it is ‘connections’.  If brazen acts of violence are committed during University Elections, it is because of the connections of these boys who patronize them. In addition, when might get into one’s head, no end is in sight.
